North Shore, Oahu
This was a concept project that had never been done before. And there’s nothing we love more than letting loose the lines and heading into uncharted waters. The concept itself is pretty simple: what is it like to be a fan at Pipe while top surfers from Peru to the Pier free surf a perfect double overhead day? From the legendary Volcom house. The execution was far from simple.
In order to ensure we set up our cameras on the best day on the North Shore, you pretty much have to be on call, ready to throw 1000 pounds of gear and your swim trunks onto a plane at, literally, a moment’s notice. The moment came and that moment happened to be Valentine’s Day, saving us from our own lack of romantic plans with our significant others. The crew at Volcom opened up their house to us in true aloha spirit, we set up a half dozen cameras pointed straight at the belly of the beast, fired up the hardware and soon we were witnessing wave shaped perfection rolling through with no jerseys, no chatter and no scores. Nothing to dilute the 200 proof Hawaiian moonshine humbling the unprepared and exulting the worthy for the ride of a lifetime.
For a day, cubicle warriors in Japan, housewives in Orange County and groms on their iPhones were able to feast on front row Pipe from a vantage point lucky few will ever get the chance to experience. Complete with instant replays, recaps of the best wipe outs and best barrels, and finishing with the warmth of a North Shore sunset. A happy Valentine’s Day indeed.
